Twelve Days Of Christmas Gifts: The Gift Of Wisdom {Day 7}

James 1:5 – But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Wisdom is a much-needed commodity today. We have access to more knowledge and information than ever before, but honestly, the current culture is, to be frank, dumber than dirt. We’ve lost reason and common sense; we’ve perverted knowledge to accept what are obviously untrue and outlandish fabrications of the depraved human mind, and our experiences don’t seem to be teaching us to make better choices. Wisdom, the right application of knowledge, is a gift from God, and sadly, God’s wisdom has been abandoned by the world.

Wisdom is more than just an intellectual understanding of certain facts. It is the ability to reason, combining knowledge and experience to reach sound, prudent conclusions. It’s the application of knowledge to the practical matters of life.

Because we are created beings, we need the wisdom of our Creator to function properly.

Jesus is the wisdom of God. He was sent by His Father to reveal the foolishness of the world’s philosophies. His life and words stand in stark contrast to human thoughts, and it is only through Jesus that we can understand the wisdom of God written down for us in the scriptures, God’s Holy Word.

1 Corinthians 1:30-31 – But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Colossians 1:2-3 – That their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Paul admonishes us … Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you with all wisdom… (Colossians 3:16).

Jesus is the wisdom of God, and we have access to this wisdom because He is the Word of God.

John 1:1,14 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. … And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Certainly, God desires for us to have wisdom – wisdom for salvation, wisdom for making right decisions, wisdom to discern between good and evil. He went to a lot of trouble to make wisdom available.

He sent Jesus, who revealed the Father’s wisdom.

He inspired and preserved His written Word, which contains all the treasures of wisdom found in Christ.

He sends the Holy Spirit to indwell those He saves, and who enlightens our minds to understand the wisdom found in His Word.

The world – those who rebel against God and refuse to believe Jesus is the Son of God – will never have wisdom. The best they can do is try to figure out life and eternity from their limited human knowledge that is scarred by a fallen nature.

I still have a long way to go in my pursuit of wisdom through knowing Christ and studying His Word. But I am so very grateful that I had parents, teachers, and mentors who modeled the wisdom of God for me and encouraged me to seek wisdom from God. How it has changed the outcome of my life!

Do you have questions?

Do you need answers?

Jesus is all the wisdom you will ever need. What a precious gift!
