I have a love for end-times prophecy. The thought of living for eternity in a redeemed, glorified body that cannot sin and cannot die, in the presence of God, finally experiencing the real life that God always intended us to have makes my heart race in anticipation.
Do you know that feeling of having your passport tucked safely in your backpack, and your carry-on suitcase packed to the brim, trying to go to sleep the night before you go on a trip to a place you’ve never been but always wanted to see? I get that feeling a lot when I ponder what heaven will be. I think about what I will feel and experience when the Rapture occurs, and we are instantly in the presence of Jesus, caught up in the air, and on our way to meet the Father. And just as you could not convince me that Italy did not exist the night before our family took our best.vacation.ever (even though I had never seen it, but only heard about it), you cannot convince me that heaven does not exist and that it is my final destination.
But in that same anticipation and excitement of the wonderful things waiting for me, there is a deep and sorrowful grief, because I know that many people I love will be left to face the terrible things that will unfold here on earth, as God’s judgment against those who have rejected Him is poured out. That makes me incredibly sad. It also inspires me to be more bold in my faith, and conscious of sharing the gospel at every opportunity.
Because I love thinking and learning about the future, I read books by Christian authors who study prophecy. I just finished The End Of America? by Jeff Kinley. Mr. Kinley is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and has written more than 30 books. He is not a sensational date-setter. Instead of looking at culture and trying to find in the Bible where we might fit, he studies Scripture and shines its light on the culture. There is a difference.
In this book, he writes a chapter called “America’s Holocaust” on the topic of abortion. He (rightly) believes that the epidemic of abortion is a key sign of the end times. Now, I know many of you who are reading this will click the little “x” at the top of the screen and check out at this point. But for those who want the truth, I want to share an excerpt from this chapter that may make you think a little differently if you believe that abortion is simply a matter of a “woman’s reproductive rights” or just a medical procedure “terminating a pregnancy.”
In the beginning of this chapter, Kinley reminds us of the horror of the Holocaust, Germany’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Question.” He describes the mobile killing stations who massacred more than a million Soviet Jews, political partisans, Gypsies, and disabled persons by shooting them without cause, or by loading them into a mobile gas chamber and piping in carbon monoxide. Concentration camps were then built to facilitate the murder of more Jews, over six million by the war’s end.
Kinley says, It took the Allied Forces time to discover and expose Hitler’s death camps. And when they did, the entire civilized world recoiled in horror and contempt. For how can a nation allow the unbridled slaughter of innocent people? And how can a government of anything less than barbarians issue edicts and pass laws to that effect? And yet in a strange and sick twist of history, what Germany did to the Jews is being done in America (along with 96% of the world’s countries). It is being done to another group of people precious to God’s heart. The unborn.
The practice of abortion is the greatest human injustice in the world today. It is the ultimate devaluation of life. And in the course of just one generation, it has become America’s national sin and shame. Yet despite this, we continue applauding, funding, and defending it.
Kinley goes on to talk about what the Bible says about child sacrifice, which is exactly what abortion is. We sacrifice the life of a child for various reasons, but all of them are rooted in the worship of ourselves. An unexpected or unwanted pregnancy will interrupt our lives, and so our own personal well-being and happiness are more important than a baby’s life. It is self-worship in the most basic sense.
But as a young woman or young man in today’s culture what you might not know is what actually happens in an abortion. After all, if you’ve never had the need for one yourself, it doesn’t sound as bad as the “right-to-life” supporters seem to believe. It’s just a medical procedure. I believe you need to know the truth and so I’m sharing from Kinley’s book the descriptions of how abortions are performed, and I pray your eyes are opened to the horror that it is.
Here are the most common methods employed today in America:
Abortion Pill – Usually taken up to 10 weeks after becoming pregnant, there are actually 2 pills given that contain 2 separate chemicals. One prompts the lining of the uterus to break down, while the other causes the uterus to empty, expelling the baby. All of this is accompanied by severe cramps and heavy bleeding. The abortion pill is about 95 percent effective.
Suction Aspiration – Also called “vacuum aspiration,” this is the most common method in use today. Mostly used during the first trimester, this method employs a powerful suction tube placed into the dilated uterus. The strong suction tears the baby apart, extracting the infant through the tube and into a jar. The abortionist must then “reassemble” the dead baby’s parts to ensure that none were left inside the womb, which could cause an infection.
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) – Performed between 7-12 weeks of pregnancy. A sharp surgical instrument is used to invade the uterus and dismember the baby’s tiny body.
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) – Similar to D&C, except that forceps are used to twist and tear away the baby’s body, which by now has developed solid bones. Bleeding is profuse. This method is so gruesome that many hospital staff and doctors refuse to perform it.
Salt Poisoning (Saline Injection) – This second-most common method is used after 16 weeks of pregnancy. The abortionist inserts a long needle through the woman’s abdomen, penetrating the baby’s amniotic sac. The child is forced to swallow the toxin, poisoning him/her to death. The baby’s skin is also burned off. It takes about an hour for death to occur with this method. The mother then delivers a dead baby. Some children survive this procedure and are born alive. They do not live long.
Prostaglandin – Here, hormones are injected into the amniotic sac, inducing contractions that produce a violent labor. Usually the hormones are combined with other chemicals that help ensure the baby dies, though the risk is great that the baby will survive. There is a risk to the mother as well, including the possibility of cardiac arrest.
Dilation and Extraction (D&X) – Using forceps, the baby’s legs are pulled out, followed by the torso, arms, and shoulders. The baby’s head typically remains inside the uterus. Then, with blunt-tipped surgical scissors, the baby’s skull is pierced and a suction catheter is inserted, extracting the “skull contents.” Fetal brains and organs are often used for experimentation.
My stomach is churning as I type these words, because these are not descriptions of a medical procedure. They are horrible actions perpetrated on innocent, living, defenseless babies with heartbeats and brainwaves, babies with arms and legs and thumbs to suck.
If you’ve had an abortion, I am deeply sorry. But know this, it is the deception of our enemy, Satan himself, who blinded your eyes to the truth and deceived you with a lie. But there is hope after abortion. It is not the unforgivable sin. God’s mercy and grace covers us if we will seek His forgiveness.
If you’ve had an abortion and are a believer who has repented and found God’s grace, I encourage you to tell your story. There are women in your life who need to hear the truth, and you can speak that truth in love with great influence. The enemy wants you to be quiet and reminds you of your shame. Don’t let him. Instead, let God use your story to influence the kingdom for life.
If you find yourself pregnant and are considering abortion, please don’t! There are many people who will help you make the right choice of giving your baby life, and will walk with you every step of the way through pregnancy and after the child is born. You only have to ask.
And if you believe abortion is acceptable, I pray that God will open your heart and your eyes. Stop listening to what our culture says and examine what the Creator said about life in the womb. He will tell you the truth.
For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand.
When I awake, I am still with You.
Psalm 139:13-18
