Open Your Eyes

John 8:12 says tells us Jesus is the Light of the world.

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

I was thinking about light this morning when I got up in the dark. I turned on the bathroom light and as it always happens, my eyes immediately closed to keep out the light. We’ve all experienced that! Our eyes need time to adjust. So, we squint and blink and finally force ourselves to open them wide so we can see clearly and wake up!

The thought occurred that this is much like what happens when a person comes to know Christ after having walked in darkness. We are given enough light to understand who Jesus is, recognize our sinful condition and repent, receiving the gift of salvation. But learning to walk in the light is a process.

If God were to shine the powerful, all-revealing light of His glory into our spiritual eyes all at once, we would be blinded. Instead, He patiently reveals Himself to us a bit at a time. By that I mean that He exposes our sinful habits, character traits, desires, and way of thinking in small increments, giving us time to let the Light penetrate our hearts and change us. As we obediently “open our eyes” we are able to see more and more clearly. On the flip side, when we reject the light that exposes our sin, tightly closing our spiritual eyes and refusing to see, we will continue to bump around in the dark and be bruised and beaten up by the dark world we’re living in.

Have you seen the Light? Are you allowing God to expose the dark corners of your heart and mind through the Word of God and the Holy Spirit’s conviction? Are you seeing clearly or still trying to view the world through the blurred focus of your old life?

Stop squinting.

Stop stumbling.

Open your eyes and trust what Jesus is showing you.

It’s always better in the Light.

John 9:40-41 – Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “We are not blind too, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”
