I think Paul’s letter to the Ephesians might be one of my favorite books in the Bible. It’s like getting a letter from a long-lost relative telling you that you have suddenly inherited everything your heart could possibly desire, or ever will desire in the future!
Paul captures our attention in the first few verses when he tells us that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). These amazing blessings are available to everyone but not everyone is willing to accept them. Why? Because they come with a price. We can only partake of the blessings if we are in Christ.
To be “in Christ” is to be saved. It is to born again spiritually (something we need because we are all spiritually dead in our sins – Ephesians 2:1). To be “in Christ” means we have repented of our sin and turned away from it, and surrendered our entire being to Christ as Lord and Savior. It is to have placed our faith in the finished work of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. It is recognizing that Jesus is indeed the Son of God, born of a virgin, and that He lived in human flesh on this earth for 33 years. It is accepting His perfect sacrifice of Himself as payment for our sin debt, and receiving the gift of eternal life.
What are some of the blessings that those who are “in Christ” have received? (Notice it is “has blessed,” indicating it is already accomplished.) A quick read of just chapter one reveals the following spiritual blessings.
We are blessed to be chosen.
We are blessed to be holy.
We are blessed to be blameless.
We are blessed to be adopted as sons.
We are blessed to be redeemed.
We are blessed to be forgiven.
We are blessed to have an inheritance.
We are blessed to have hope.
We are blessed to bring praise to God.
We are blessed to be saved.
We are blessed to be sealed with the Holy Spirit.
We are blessed to be given wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ.
We are blessed to have our spiritual eyes enlightened.
We are blessed to have a calling.
We are blessed to enjoy the riches of God’s glory.
We are blessed to experience His power – the same power that raised Jesus from the dead!
We are blessed to have Jesus as the Head of the body, the church.
That’s just chapter one, and I’m sure there are some I missed. In Christ, God has blessed us with EVERY spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Why would we not want to be so blessed? The world’s view of God as a tyrant or dictator is a lie of the devil. The idea that God is withholding something good or wants to spoil our fun and make us miserable is simply bad propaganda that the devil has spread since God first said, “Let there be light.”
Nothing in this world compares to knowing Jesus in this life. I can only imagine what it will be like to experience Him fully in eternity!
1 Corinthians 13:12 – For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known.
1 Corinthians 2:9 – But just as it is written: “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the human heart, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.”
